GIY turns 10 this month and to "celerybrate" they have a stomper of a line-up for Food Matters 2018 at GROW HQ, the home of the GIY movement. There will be a food photography and styling workshop, cider making and apple pressing demos, growing veg Q&A’s, a GIY Cottage Market collective from across Ireland and pots more fun and informative sessions to dig in to over the Harvest Festival weekend! Plus Karen and Mick from RTÉ TV series GROW COOK EAT will be at GROW HQ for the weekend’s festivities – make sure to get some behind the scenes info from them while visiting the TV Garden right outside HQ!
6pm–10pm: Join Head Chef JB Dubois, recently nominated for Food & Wine Magazines Rising Star Award, at GROW HQ as we launch GIY's Home Grown Series for 2018 / 2019. An innovative and seasonal 7 course tasting menu will be served for this special occasion featuring a whole host of fresh ingredients grown right there in GROW HQ- where the veg takes centre stage! Welcome drink also included on arrival. Tickets will sell out fast - book now to avoid disappointment. Admission: €45 each
10am–1pm: Apples 101: Guest Speakers: Legacy Irish Cider joined by GROW HQ Head Chef JB Dubois and GROW HQ Head Grower Richard Mee. A 3 hour APPLEtiser celebrating the humble apple during the height of apple harvest season in Ireland! Learn from Waterford’s own Legacy Irish Cider on how cider is made with a live in-house demo! GROW HQ’s Head Chef JB Dubois will demonstrate how to get the best out of Irish apples in your cooking – from apple tarts to apple jelly and lots more in between! Richard Mee, Head Grower at GROW HQ, will also discuss how to plant and care for your own orchard, even if you only have a small amount of space. The different varieties of Irish Heritage Apples are so important to our island and we will be discussing the ones native to the South East region. Admission: €30 each
2pm–4pm: Guest Speakers: Sinead Delahunty – Delalicious, Frances Walsh – The Honest Project, Caroline Hennessy – Bibliocook and Sarah-Kim Watchorn who previously worked with Donal Skehan, Roz Purcell, Chef Adrian and many more. Are you an up and coming foodie where you live and breathe your personal blog or Insta? Would you like to learn from award winning food writers, bloggers and authors? Then this 2 hour interactive workshop is for you! You will learn how to make your photos look like they are ‘gram worthy and Blog ready in an instant. Hear about major fails and how they can be restored with the right props and apps. Every one of us started out with zero followers and no audience but with passion, guidance and a great learning environment you could be Ireland’s next great food writer or photographer! There will also be a Q&A session where our panel of experts will be able to help steer you in the right direction. Admission: €20 each
5pm – 9pm: Harvest Menu at GROW HQ (normal bistro service with Special Harvest Menu). Pay as you go.
11am – 4pm: Cottage Market Collective - The GIY Cottage Markets help urban and rural communities in Ireland develop from the inside out as each location creates a market that reflects the diverse skills and talents of the people that live there. They work in harmony with other community initiatives towards cohesive community development. A variety of food producers, artists, bakers, crafters and more from GIY Cottage Markets across Ireland will be at GROW HQ. There will also be seed sowing, face painting, garden tours and food sampling. Admission: FREE
2pm – 3pm: RTÉjr Star Muireann Ní Chíobháin will lead the way with an action-packed fun filled children’s activity area at GROW HQ! Let your little one (age 5 years old and over) dance, learn and laugh their socks off! Admission: FREE and Booking is essential. NB: Children's parents and/or guardians must remain on-site while this event is taking place.
3pm – 4pm: GROW COOK EAT workshop with Karen and Mick off de telly! Karen and Mick will demonstrate GROW HQ's organic approach to keeping plants and soil healthy, managing slugs and other pests, and simple techniques to get the most veg from the smallest of spaces. You will learn about how fruit, herbs and veg grow, how and when to sow a variety of seeds as well as the connection between your health and the health of the soil where your food comes from. Admission: FREE
